The projects you\u2019ll find described in our\u00a0<strong>annual report<\/strong>\u00a0have taken our work to new levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In&nbsp;<strong>Benin<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>West Africa<\/strong>, our&nbsp;<strong>Solar Market Gardens<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 solar-powered drip irrigation systems \u2013 have vastly improved villagers\u2019 nutrition and income;<\/li><li>Building on our collaboration with the&nbsp;<strong>Clinton HIV\/AIDS Initiative<\/strong>, SELF has begun solar-electrifying clinics across&nbsp;<strong>Rwanda<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Lesotho&nbsp;<\/strong>through our Solar Health Care Partnership with&nbsp;<strong>Partners In Health<\/strong>, the organization co-founded by&nbsp;<strong>Dr. Paul Farmer<\/strong>; and<\/li><li>In the Eastern Cape,&nbsp;<strong>South Africa<\/strong>, our&nbsp;<strong>Solar Rural Schools Project&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 installing and powering computer labs, Internet access and learning software \u2013 is bringing the world to one of its remotest corners.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re glad to report that our support came from both individuals and institutions; thank&nbsp;<em><strong>you<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;for your help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"437\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bobfreling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/selfcontributions.gif\" alt=\"selfcontributions.gif\" class=\"wp-image-157\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our focus is on our projects.\u00a0 Our annual report outlines how SELF:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Installed more than 32 kilowatts (kW) of solar electric systems in 5 health clinics and three schools;<\/li><li>Impacted more than 55,000 people in Rwanda, Lesotho, Benin and South Africa;<\/li><li>Bridged the digital divide for over 3,000 students and their families in the remote Eastern Cape province of South Africa;<\/li><li>Continued monitoring and evaluating the success of our multi-phase solar drip irrigation project in Benin; added training and introduction of new seed varieties;<\/li><li>Began design and installation of solar electric systems for five additional health centers in Rwanda to be completed in January 2009;<\/li><li>Completed assessments and site planning for the electrification of 10 health clinics in Haiti, 6 clinics in Rwanda and one clinic in Burundi; and<\/li><li>Began preparations for the \u201cwhole village\u201d electrification of two villages in Benin; this phase will supply power for drinking water wells, home and street lighting, schools, health clinics, and microenterprise centers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"514\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bobfreling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/selfefficiency.gif\" alt=\"selfefficiency.gif\" class=\"wp-image-158\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the verge of our 20th anniversary, we are now poised to harness the rising tide of awareness and fight two of the greatest challenges of the century:&nbsp;<strong>climate change<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>energy poverty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.givedirect.org\/give\/givefrm.asp?Action=GC&amp;CID=868&amp;AVS=OFF\"><strong>jo<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.org\/donate-today\/\">in us<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;once again?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2008 was an extraordinary year of accomplishment and transition for\u00a0SELF.
